After doing research for my last blog, Skincare, Gangnam Style, I started seriously thinking about the skincare and grooming habits of American men.   In South Korea, the male artists topping the pop charts are also celebrated for being “Flower Boys”, men whose physical beauty rivals that of women.  Although this is not the cultural norm here in the good ol’ U-S-of A, I am sure we all remember the rise of the “metrosexual male” that became all the rage back in the late 1990’s, early 2000’s.  Back then, it seemed like every guy I knew was running to closest salon to have their hair dyed/highlighted, a la Ricky Martin and a young Justin Timberlake.  Although beauty treatments to that extreme are no longer en vogue in the states, old habits do die hard.  That said, I took to social media to find out what grooming habits guys are into these days and was pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of responses!  So ladies, grab your guys, because this blog is just for them!

Much like us lady-folk, men’s skincare habits can run the gamut from non-existent to extreme.  But unlike us ladies, men have more of a tendency to keep their skincare routines on the down low.  Regardless of your gender, skin is skin and needs to be taken care of so it can take care of you!

At the very least, everyone should have a solid routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturizing with products that address your particular skin type.   In addition, including a gentle face scrub in your routine, like St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub – a Dollface favorite, helps to avoid ingrown hairs and keeps your face boy band smooth.  Clinique Skin Supplies for Men came most highly recommended by the men I polled, followed by the Jack Black skincare line.  However, if your pockets aren’t quite that deep, Esquire Magazine calls Nivea for Men their favorite drugstore brand.  Jules has raved our Nivea Q10 Eye Cream for Men for years. It’s amazing and not just for men! Check out her blog from 2010, Dark Circles No More!

Finally, it is important for our men to know that SPF is your friend!  One of the most common locations that men develop skin cancer and melanoma is on their unprotected ears and head, so be sure to pick up a moisturizer that has a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF.  I like Cetaphil’s Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 50.

Shaving is a rite of passage for every young man, and boy do they take it seriously!  As a military spouse, I feel that I should buy stock in Gillette.  I shed a tear every time my husband has to shell out big bucks on razors in order to maintain that military mandated clean shave.  Thankfully, an old friend from high school has passed along his secret to smooth skin without breaking the bank!

Allow me to introduce you to Dollar Shave Club!!!  Think of it as NetFlix for your face!  Along with a great product at a low monthly price, their advertisements are friggin’ hilarious!

When it comes to choosing a shaving cream, it seems the rule is the more emollient the better.  Old-school shaving soaps (the kind you apply with a soft badger or horse hair brush) appear to be a favorite among traditionalists, as they do a fabulous job of softening skin and whiskers, as well as coating the face during shaving to provide skin protection and lubrication for the razor.  Plus, they do not contain the skin drying alcohol and synthetic substances that canned creams and gels do.

The best shaving tips that I ever learned were from Kyan Douglas on the old Bravo Network show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Man, I miss those guys!).  Here are a few of the stand outs…

·       Always shave after right after the shower because your hair is already soft and your pores are open.

·       Go SLOW and use smaller strokes.

·       The hair on your neck under your chin much coarser then the rest, so save it for last to allow the shaving cream to soften it.

Manicures, Pedicures, Facials and Hair Removal

What’s wrong with a little extra pampering from time to time?  I’ll tell you… nothing.  There is many a man out there who depends on their significant other to handle mani’s, pedi’s and brow maintenance, but why not treat yourself to a professional service?  There is a reason why we women love it!  And trust me when I say, you will not be the first guy to have done it, nor will you be the last. Putting yourself in the hands of a professional can ensure a high quality outcome.  If you are in Savannah, treat yourself to a Sugaring service with Jessica, who can attend to all of your manscaping needs.  You deserve it, big guy!

I have to admit, of all the blogs I have written, this was the most eye opening and fun to research!  Many thanks to all the guys who provided me with their recommendations (special shout out to Andrew “Higgins” Winninger).  I’d love to hear your feedback, so feel free to comment below!

I hope all of the daddies out there had a stellar Father’s Day and know how much you are loved!
