I have a confession to make.  Before I became a makeup artist, my skincare routine left a lot to be desired.  I managed to make it through my teens and early twenties virtually acne-free; my skin was even, balanced and smooth.  Now, as I embark on chapter 29 of my life, I am faced with a whole new set of challenges.  Not only am I missing my lightning fast metabolism and Gumby-like flexibility, but I have also gained a variety of different lumps and bumps on my skin that I just did not have the skills to deal with.

As we age our skin’s oil production and cell turn-over slows down as stress increases, which creates cortisol – one of the largest causes of adult acne.  Major life changes (marriage, babies, demanding careers) plus little sleep can wreak havoc on our aging skin.  Along with lots of water and plenty of rest, I believe that I have found a key for keeping my skin fresh looking.  And it all starts with a pretty, yellow flower.

Witch Hazel.  The value of this little plant has been recognized for centuries, first used by the Native Americans by harvesting the leaves and bark for medicinal purposes.  Today, witch hazel can be used for a variety of common ailments  http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/witch-hazel-uses-and-risks however in the world of skincare, witch hazel is best used as an astringent.  I love the way that it gently removes excess oil and impurities without over-drying my skin.  Any blemishes I may have are dried up within 24 hours, and my pores have never looked smaller!  Have a wild night out?  Keep a Ziploc bag of cotton swabs soaked in witch hazel in your refrigerator to combat puffiness under your eyes.  And let’s not forget the boys – this product also works wonders as an aftershave.

Witch Hazel is a wonderful gift from Mother Nature, so effective yet gentle enough for those who suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.  Unlike its toner/astringent counterparts filled with ingredients that are impossible to pronounce, it only has 3 total ingredients (witch hazel, water, and alcohol) and is a drugstore find with a price that cannot be beat! I have added it to my skincare routine, after cleansing and before moisturizer, only a few weeks ago, but I can attest that my skin has never looked or felt better.
